Canada’s mining industry is facing a crippling labour shortage. Ottawa’s Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MIHR) ‘s projected demand for labour is 92,000 people, even before accounting for the baby boom retirement in which 40 per cent of the workforce will leave a vacuum.
There is now a strong demand for skilled workers, including engineers, technicians and specialised trades people. The benefits are immensely attractive: qualified workers hired in the mining industry are commanding high salaries resulting from the severe labour shortage, and MIHR president Paul Hebert states that the average base pay of a salaried mine worker has increased almost 20 per cent since 2002. Bonuses have seen a similarly dramatic increase, sometimes at double the base salary.
Francis McGuire, the chief executive of Major Drilling Group International Inc figures immigration is the only way the industry will solve its labour problem. It’s not too difficult to gain a foothold in this industry of many opportunites. “The mining industry requires one of the broadest skill sets of any industry in the world,” says Peter Jones, chief executive of HudBay and chairman of the Mining Association of Canada. “And there’s room for almost anybody.”
